In 1988, a steering committee of eight Saint Cloud citizens who were concerned about the lack of decent, affordable housing applied to start a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity to serve the needs of families in Central Minnesota. In 1989, we were granted affiliate status, and we began the construction of our first Habitat home in St. Cloud . Our first Partner Family purchased the home in 1990.
Since that time, we have expanded our service area to cover Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, and Wright Counties. In its first 15 years, Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity (CMHFH) completed 30 homes. In 2004, we were building about 4 homes a year, but we wanted to do more. We have been in a period of growth and strengthening since then, with an aim to increase our capacity to serve families by 150%: 10 homes a year by 2010, with a goal of having served 75 families by completing 75 simple, decent affordable homes for purchase by the end of 2010. For more information, see our 10 by 2010 plan. |

| Habitat for Humanity has been accurately described as "a hand-up, not a hand-out." Habitat purposefully works in partnership WITH deserving families, who also contribute to Habitat in a number of ways. Selected Habitat families not only pay back their no-interest loan, but each adult in the Partner Family must also work 200 hundred of hours of "Sweat Equity", in order to purchase a Habitat home. For more information on who qualifies or how to apply for a home with Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity, please visit the Home Owner Info section of our website. |
